Engine knocking

Few days  ago, on the fateful day of Sunday, I was with my friend and enjoying a bike ride. After reaching our destination, my friend parked his bike, and off the ignition. The real story starts here, as soon as ignition is off, sudden noise started coming from bikes engine.
As a Mechanical Engineer, I asked few questions to my friend, just like, when did you last serviced your bike , did you check engine oil regularly, what kind of oil you have used and many more of such kinds. After listening to these questions, he was like, what is the connection between that noise and servicing of bike! Then I replied, the noise coming from engine is called as Engine knocking, this scenerio is very dangerous for your loving bike. After this he realised the seriousness of Engine knocking and was very keen to know more about it.
I explained him, that knocking takes place in petrol engines after the ignition is completed, this is  because, many times some fuel molecules are not combusted during actual ignition, once the ignition is put off, due to very high temperature inside the engine cylinder, this unburned fuel gets combusted, this results in formation of various pressure waves inside the cylinder, when such pressure waves get, interfere with another pressure wave, concept of resonance occurs and piston is forced to go down in engine cylinder, this uneven combustion leads to concept called knocking.
I noticed, after listening to this detail concept, he was bored and want to know what is the solution, so without wasting time I suggested him few things to do, first is service from authorised workshop, use of good quality of Engine oil, periodically engine oil top-ups and resting bike after some period during long rides. The another solution I suggested to him was Engine flush.
He was convinced and was ready to do all the things, required for well-being of his bike.
I request all, not to take the noise, called knocking from engine for granted, it can cause serious damage to your bikes or for any petrol engines, use authorised SAE marked engine oil, maintain your bike regularly, give oil top-ups before long rides and regularly check  engine oil. This small things like knocking, which we neglect in our vehicles can cause serious issues in long run.
Be careful, follow service routine and do riding on bikes.

  1. There are different types of engine oil for different types on engines, ask to your mechanic for best engine oil for your bike engine. Another thing engine flush changes the viscosity of engine oil. So you have to do engine flush once in 20000 KM
